Dear Friends of the GIGA,

On 28 October, Brazil, one of the largest democracies in the Global South, is set to hold the decisive second round of its presidential elections. Brazilian electoral institutions worked to the best standards in the first round. However, the threats of the incumbent president, Jair Bolsonaro, not to accept the vote if he should lose, loom large over the run-off. This continues a worrisome global trend, for which Donald Trump’s non-acceptance of the Biden victory set a negative example. As electoral processes are increasingly coming under attack, this GIGA Talk will analyse the consequences for Brazil and for Europe’s relations with the country.
